Lesson Notes: Mary

You know that God can do anything and he could have brought Jesus into the world in any way He wanted. He could have walked into town as a fully grown man. He could have come in some form greater than we could ever have imagined. BUT it was God’s plan to send His son as an infant and an infant is dependent on a Mother and because of that fact, Mary mother of God’s son, is a critical part of God’s plan for our salvation.

So in this lesson we learn more about Mary and how Jesus shares her with us as OUR mother too, and some of the wonderful implications of that!

We honor Mary for her perfect example of faith.  We look to her for help because she is constantly pointing us to Jesus so we can love Him better, and we ask Mary to pray for us and trust she is lifting up all our intentions to her son.

Our activity for this lesson ties in a couple things:

  1. There’s a brief story about Our Lady of Guadalupe in the lesson and we give you a copy of her image to add to your prayer table.
  2. There are instructions for flowers to lay at her feet. Petals are folded paper and if you’d like, write some prayer intentions inside, glue it all together, and entrust Mary to take care of them.

Then on the back cover there is a little Q and A with some common questions about what we believe about Mary:

Do Catholics worship Mary? Why pray to Mary when we can go directly to God? Did Jesus have brothers or sisters?

Even if your kids are too little for you to make this part of your lesson time, we recommend parents read it over and become more familiar with some important teachings of the Catholic Faith.
