It is a traditional Epiphany custom to bless your home on that day by writing the initials of the three wise men, together with the Cross and the current year above your door. This year it would look like this:
20 + C + M + B + 10
While the names of the three Wise Men are not recorded in Scripture, Tradition holds that they were Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar. These three initials can also stand for Christus mansionem benedicat (Christ, bless this dwelling). Using a piece of blessed chalk will give the added power of using a sacramental with your prayer, as will sprinkling your rooms with holy water as you process through and pray that your home will be a place of peace where the Gospel is lived out each day of the upcoming year.
The traditional date of Epiphany is always January 6 (the 12th day of Christmas), but in the United States the celebration is transferred to the nearest Sunday – this year January 3.
