This month’s memory prayer for grades 4-6 is an ancient prayer honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary and asking for her help. It was originally part of a much longer prayer, but over time the Memorare was popularized as a separate prayer.
The name of the prayer, Memorare, comes from the Latin translation for the first word in the prayer – remember – and it’s pronounced “meh-mo-RAH-ray.”
If you’re memorizing this prayer for the first time, take a little time to go through the vocabulary. (What is “intercession?” What does it mean to “implore?” Who is the “Word Incarnate?”) Also, consider learning the song with the Memory Verse Audio CD you received with your October Home Lesson packet, or simply break the prayer up a bit and learn it in parts.
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, I fly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother.
To thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate, do not despise my petitions, but in your mercy hear and answer my prayers. Amen.
