The holy catholic Church

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.

Have you ever noticed that the word catholic, as used in the Apostles’ Creed is not capitalized?  It’s because in this usage it means “universal” instead of referring specifically to the Roman Catholic Church.

On a related note, it’s interesting to know that the Apostles’ Creed really is a unifying point for Christians from a variety of faiths.  Among others, Roman Catholics, Lutherans, Anglicans, Methodists, Presbyterians, and Congregationalists all use the statements in the Apostles’ Creed to teach the basic tenets of Christianity.
