Our Sabbath Scripture Stories – 2nd Sunday of Lent – Cycle B

Mom sat suspiciously by the piano this Sunday morning.  Her hands were lightly running over the keys as if she was trying to practice without making any noise.  The look on her face was intense until Vincent sneaked up behind her.

“Hey, Mom!” he shouted by her left ear.  “What‘cha doin’?” 

Mom shot up like a rocket into space, and her face turned white as snow with surprise.

“Vincent David Pauline!” she finally got breath back to exclaim.  “Never startle me like that again!”

Vincent was laughing as all the other Paulines crowded into the living room to see what the noise was about. 

“You REALLY must have been concentrating to not hear me come behind you!” Vincent giggled.  “You really turned pale!”

“Very funny!” Mom said, laughing now herself. 

“Well as long as we are all here,” Dad reasoned, “let’s read our Sabbath Scripture passage for this morning!”

Everyone settled in the living room chairs, but Mom remained by the piano.

“Well, Everybody!” Dad started, “Mom has decided that our Gospel reading deserves a song!  So, after I read the passage, Mom is going to lead us in the singing of a tune based on this verse!”

“Neat, Dad!” Mary Clare said.  “I always remember the Scripture reading better when it sings through my head all day!”

“Oh, you will remember this one!” Dad told her.

Dad then opened his Bible and read the passage from Mark, Chapter 9, Verses 2 through 10.  This was the beautiful passage about the Transfiguration of Jesus where He went up to the mountaintop with Peter, James, and John and was transfigured as a sparkling, glorified image before their eyes.  The voice of the Father instructs them from the clouds that “This is my beloved Son.  Listen to Him.”  (Mark 9:7b)

“So, are you ready for the song?” Mom asked as she played a string of streaming notes across the piano keys.

“Sure are!” they all answered together.

Dad reached into the back of his Bible and pulled out a few lyric sheets for the kids to read as they sang.  He then told Baby Ben, “You can just hum along!”

After a crack of her piano-playing knuckles, Mom began.  The entire family joined in singing “The Transfiguration Song”!            

TA-DA!  The family clapped their approval at Mom’s song!  Everyone loved it!

The Transfiguration Song
(Sing to the tune of “On Top of Ol’ Smokey.”)

On top of the mountain,
It was quite a sight!
Jesus, our Savior,
Turned sparkling white!

John, James, and Peter
Were rubbing their eyes.
What happened to Jesus
Was quite a surprise!

He sparkled and shimmered,
Then out of the blue,
Elijah and Moses
Appeared with Him, too.

The vision of Jesus,
With prophets of old,
Said He’s the fulfillment
The prophets foretold.
 
God’s voice spoke above them,
With vigor and vim,
That “He’s my Beloved Son!
Listen to Him!”

Then Jesus forewarned them,
“Tell no one this story!”
About transfigurating,
A foretaste of glory!

Until a date later
That Jesus, the Son,
Completes His appointment,
And the victory’s won!

“I liked the part when it says Peter, James, and John rubbed their eyes because Jesus was so sparkly white!” Lucy added.

“I bet Jesus turned even whiter than Mom when I scared her!” Vincent chuckled, turning one more time to smile innocently at his mother. 

“You know, Mom, I am going to be humming this song all day now!” Mary Clare laughed as she grabbed her coat for church.

And with this new song in their hearts, the family went off to Mass!
