May is the month of Mary

Few subjects have inspired more beautiful art over the centuries than the Blessed Virgin Mary!

This work is one of many that can be found in the Convent of San Marco in Florence, Italy.  In the 15th century, Fra Angelico created one piece for each of the cells (dormitories) in the convent as its only adornment and it became the focus of meditation for the man who lived there.  In this piece, we see the Blessed Mother being crowned Queen of Heaven and Earth by her Son.  The Saints with hands upraised in adoration at the foot of the piece are (L-R) Saint Thomas Aquinas, Saint Benedict, Saint Dominic, Saint Francis, Saint Peter the Martyr and Saint Mark.

The convent was confiscated from the Dominicans during the Napoleonic Wars and is now a museum.
